Iftar at Mum's

Was invited for iftar at my mum's today. Little Lady suddenly got the urge to wear hijab, she even found a pin to match her outfit and pinned the hijab herself. I got to enjoy mum's garden in what was probably one of the last warm weekends of the year as we spotted all the different things that are growing.

The loveliest red bell pepper I have ever seen and some crazy looking purple and red pepper.

It was nice also to get a nap on her sofa and then not have to spend the evening cooking (I did help out though, honest!)

Fruit Salad with mango, melon, papaya, red and green grapes, peach, plum, guava, banana, apple, pomegranate and a dash of spice.

There was more (tandoori chicken, kebab's, spring roles, sevaiya (vermicelli in milk), but mum had the sense to make just a little of everything as everyone's appetites seem to have shrunk. No-one even touched the chocolate fudge cake I took around, which was quite something considering us four sisters love the stuff.

Of course the evening was not without drama, Little Man walked into a wall and cut his head (tiny cut alhamdulillah). Of course, in good old-fashioned desi syle the mother-in-law called for aftershave and then proceeded to splash the stuff onto the cut which made Little Man scream the place down for the next five minutes (my gran used to do the same to us). Thankfully the bleeding stopped almost immediately and he was back careering round the place with me beseeching him to be careful.

All in all, it was a relaxing, restful day with family and lovely food alhamdulillah.

BTW, I posted my cards and gifts that were due to go abroad today in the hope that they get to their destinations in time for Eid. Insh'Allah, I'll post my cards to those in the UK sometime midweek. Thankfully I have the coming week off from work so that I can rest and make the most of these precious last days of Ramadan, and perhaps engage in a little Eid prep insh'Allah.

  1. Mashallah! Little Lady's hijab looks better than mine! I am fundamentally challenged in the hijab pinning and styling department.

The meal looks fab, what are those fried triangular pastries? Looks tasty.

  4. The food does look very yummy. Loved the pics if the garden esp the purple peppers! Not seen those before. So glad you got around to making the Eid banner. Have yet to make mine!

iMuslimah, the triangular pastries are called samosas an either have a veggie or minced meat filling.

  5. Assalam-alaikam,

    Sister iMuslimah,
seriously, it took me ages to get the hang of wrapping my long hijabs (I wore sqaure ones for years). She just takes a pin, winds the thing round her head and is done! The triangle pastries are as Girlwhowalksin the rain explained samosa's, they had savoury chicken and lamb stuffing - very typical Ramadan food in the Asian community.

    Oh Sis Washi,
the food was yum, shame our appetites have shrunk.

    Sister Unique,
mash'Allah, my mum loves gardenign and her garden is always a pleasure to sit in.

    Sister GWWITR,
thank you for the samosa explanation. Would love to see pics of your Eid banner.
