Simple Iftar

Despite my families grumbling I have tried to keep our iftars as simple as possible with the rule "no fried food" (this is followed by a filling meal after maghrib salah). It's not easy to get away from samosa's to open your fast, as my neighbours' teens said when she tried to ban them: "If we can't have samosa's what are we fasting for!!"

For some excellent advice about how to make the most of Ramadan check out Umm Yusuf's excellent post Common Mistakes Made During Ramadan (thanks to Sister Hijabi Apprentice for the link).

  1. Hello Sister, Asalamoalaikum! I am so happy to find your blog. I found you from the yahoo Halal cooking website you've posted to. I am new there, new to Islam. My husband is a hafiz in Pakistan waiting for immigration. We have been waiting 5 years. So this is my 5th Ramadan of thinking, planning, collecting halal recipes and Ramadan plans, studying Islam. You sound like super-woman! WOW what a busy life! I appreciate your Ramadan planning guide a lot!

  2. LMHO @ "If we can't have samosa's what are we fasting for!!"

I was spoiled enough to have freshly made samosa/sambusa the first several years of being Muslim and it was really nice.

I love your simple iftar. We normally just break with a date and milk/water at the masjid just prior to Maghrib and then we come home for a proper dinner.

So far I have been fasting and it is going well, alhamdulillah.

I pray you and your family reap all of the rewards during this Blessed month.

    ma'a salaamah,

  4. Wa alaikum assalam,

Great link, thank your for posting and reminding us. We try to keep ftor simple this year as well...so far so good. InshaAllah, we will keep up with this. I hope Little Man is not too disappointed. I always believe that things happen for a reason so maybe something else (and better) will cross his way, InshaAllah!

  5. Assalamualikum.

MashAllah, you could really make your Iftar 'samoosa' free-).
My husband and I would initally, each year before Ramadan begin make a neeyah of trying to avoid the fried snacks. But Once the fast begins, the resolve breaks down.
    thanks for the links.

  7. Assalam-alaikam,

    Sister Bluebirdy,
thanks for stopping by. I always feel like such a fraud when someone pays me that kind of compliment, but I guess the good find only good in others.
I'm not sure which site you mean - I can't remember.
I'm sorry to hear that you've been through so much, I hope this blessed month brings changes for the better for you insh'Allah.

    Sister HA,
I hope you are keeping well. I fasted during pregnancy too and found it okay, expect the odd lecture though. I just htought as apregnant woman who is fasting, I could ask Allah (SWT) for so much more for my unborn child. Flawed thinking perhaps as he does not stint in his giving, but that's how I felt at the time.

Jazakh'Allah-khairun for your dua (and for all of the great recipes).

    Sister Ummnassim
Alhamdulillah I agree. He's not taken it too badly. I will be visiting your blog to look for stuff I can do with him (the video's especially are an easy option.

    Sister UmmSaaz
I know what you mean about the samosa's, so I have planned to give everyone a surprise fry-up (samosas, pakoras, spring-rolls) each Saturday of Ramadan - I htink they might feel a little cheated otherwise.

    Kitchen Flavours.
Wow!! I went through all of your blog and really enjoyed myself. I think I might submit a few posts for stuff I have made during Ramadan insh'Allah.
